In recent years, lip blushing has surged in popularity, especially with the rise of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, making it a hot trend in semi-permanent makeup. Data from Google Trends in late 2022 showed a significant increase in people searching for lip blushing, indicating its growing demand among beauty enthusiasts. Unlike traditional lip tattoos, which focused on creating bold outlines, modern lip blushing offers a more natural enhancement of lip color and shape through techniques like pixelating, which deposits small, undetectable dots of pigment. This creates a soft, natural lip tint that enhances the lips’ fullness and symmetry without the need for invasive procedures like fillers.
People are increasingly drawn to lip blushing for several reasons. Not only does it simplify their beauty routine, as there’s less need for daily lipstick application, but it’s also seen as a safer, less painful alternative to fillers. Additionally, it is smudge-proof, making it resistant to the effects of activities like swimming or sweating.

How Does a Lip Blushing Procedure Go?
The Lip Blushing procedure does not take long, it takes approximately 2.5-3hrs hours to complete from start to finish.
Before the procedure begins, the artist applies a topical numbing cream to the entire lip to keep it comfortable and to control bleeding and swelling.
After the numbing, the artist sketches the lip shape using a bright colored lip liner, once the shape is drawn then begins the tattooing process.
During the lip blushing procedure, the artist implants the pigment into the first layer of the skin with a cosmetic tattoo machine and a single-use sterile PMU needle.
The whole process is known as ‘pixelating,’ which consists of thousands of microdots of pigment placed across the skin to create a layer of coverage and colour, the more layers add and the tighter the pixels, the deeper and more saturated the colour becomes.
Once the colour deposit is complete, artist will clean the lips and apply a thin coat of a healing balm.

Is lip blushing painful?
The lips are a sensitive area of the body and like most tattoo procedures, there will be some pain, but as mentioned above, most technicians will use a numbing cream to ease the pain during the process.Â

What's the aftercare process?
The healing process of lip blushing takes about 5 to 10 days. Side effects such as swelling and redness may occur during the healing process and you can use soothing aftercare cream to apply to your lips daily for one week. Do not apply lipstick on top of the lip blushing while it is healing, as this may risk infection. Avoid intense workouts and sun exposure during this time, too. By the end of the first week, the lips will scab, and the scabs will fall off. (Whatever you do, don’t pick or peel them.) If you need, your provider will conduct a second session in 6 to 12 weeks to touch up the colour.
